This articles features highlights from two recent articles in the scientific community. A report from a prestigous French group finds that colon cancer patients have an abnormal mix of bacteria in their colon, a simply bad mix. And, There is now a great deal of research that shows short chain fatty acid (SCFAs), a wonderful substance, nourishes the bowel wall and makes the bowel more acidic, both very healthy outcomes. Prebiotics accelerate the number of the good bacteria that make SCFAs.

There are so many disorders of the gut, but colon cancer and polyps is at the top of the list. We now have dietary evidence that getting enough calcium, vegetables and fruits in your diet puts you at a lower risk of colon cancer. We also know that the bacterial makeup within the colon is a leading actor in this colon cancer drama. When there is a preponderance of bad bacteria within the colon, or microbiota as it is called in science, then inflammation occur. Along with this is the change in the cells that line the colon. It is these changes that seem to predispose one to malignant cells.

The bottom line and recommendation for patients is to avoid all boxed, packaged and bottled food unless the label is very carefully read. Even then, you can not be sure as the FDA allows food manufacturers not to list o emulsifiers as they are considered GRAS-Generally Recognized As Safe. I am not so sure.
