New Research Confirms Prebiotics Prevent Bone Loss, Increase Bone Mineral DensityNew research performed at Florida State University, Tallahassee, and published in the February 2010 Journal of Medicinal Food provides more evidence that prebiotics increase bone mineral density, prevent bone loss. Many substances can help improve bone health IF they can be properly absorbed into the body: Vitamin D3, Calcium, Soy Isoflavones, etc. That's exactly the problem...many sources of these substances lack good "bioavailabillity" - they are poorly absorbed by the body - sometimes not at all. New research demonstrates that prebiotics enhance the effects of soy isoflavones, improving their bioavailability and thus enhancing bone health. Soy isoflavones must be converted into a substance called equol in the colon in order to be absorbed, and prebiotics create the fermentation that does this. (Past research has already proved that prebiotics improve calcium absorption as well). The research demonstrated that bone mineral density increased more when using a prebiotic fructo-oligosaccharide supplement (like Prebiotin) along with soy isoflavones than with soy alone. |
