Gut Microbiota and Obesity-Induced Inflammation: Men’s Health Month Edition
Since June is Men’s Health Month, it is a great time to take a closer look at one of the hidden ways obesity causes disease: obesity-induced inflammation. As the name implies, obesity-induced inflammation is an inflammatory state not caused by an infection, but instead caused by excess stores of body fat.
Obesity-induced inflammation complicates virtually every inflammatory disease in some way, including type 2 diabetes, atherosclerosis, certain cancers and Alzheimer’s disease. Fortunately, the key to fighting obesity-induced inflammation is to enlist the help of trillions of tiny soldiers: the microorganisms that make up your gut microbiota.
Fava with Roasted Vegetables
Fava (not to be confused with fava beans) is a puree of cooked yellow split peas, flavored with onion and olive oil. The smokiness of the lentils plays against the caramelized sweetness of the vegetables beautifully. It’s ultrasimple, but there’s a secret: The type of olive oil you use can make or break this dish. Using a high quality extra-virgin olive oil is a must. Its acidity and fruity flavor perfectly balances the dish. Feel free to play around with dried and fresh herbs for seasoning.
